How does maca root work?

Maca (Lepidium meyenii) is a very nutrient-rich plant native to Peru. It is characterized by an almost complete amino acid profile, the content of essential fatty acids (EFAs), the presence of vitamins (B1, B2, B3, C) and minerals (copper, zinc, manganese, iron, selenium, boron). In addition, maca root has plant sterols in its composition, the use of which can have a beneficial effect on reducing blood cholesterol levels.

Adaptogenic effects
Maca root is included in a group of substances called adaptogens. Adaptogenic action consists in alleviating and counteracting the effects of physical and mental stress caused by harmful factors from the surrounding environment. Adaptogens regulate the state of the central nervous system, can increase the body's adaptation to high physical exertion and mental work, and help maintain homeostasis. They are used in states of exhaustion, fatigue and nervous system tension. Consumption of matzo leads to increased energy, endurance and resistance to stress.

Endocrine system
A sizable body of research shows that maca can help regulate the female endocrine system. Organic maca has been shown to stimulate estrogen production, suppress folliculotropic hormone and reduce the severity of menopausal symptoms (hot flashes and night sweats) in postmenopausal women. Another double-blind, placebo-controlled study revealed that maca dulls psychological symptoms, including anxiety and depression, and alleviates sexual dysfunction in postmenopausal women on both estrogenic and androgenic levels. These observations have led researchers to conclude that maca should be used as an alternative or adjunct to hormone replacement therapy (HTZ).

Evidence from clinical trials also shows that maca can balance and raise male hormones. Unfortunately, most of this is limited to sexual performance only. Use of maca among men has been shown to increase semen volume, sperm count during ejaculation, and sperm motility.
